Pottery Throwing Taster
What's Involved
Escape the digital world for a couple of hours, connect with your creativity, and throw your way to a masterpiece!
Even complete beginners will experience the pleasure of creating a useful and beautiful piece of pottery from just a ball of clay and your own hands.
We'll learn to centre the clay on the wheel, and from that to make a cylinder bowl or vase.
The clay is totally recyclable, so have as many practices as you like!
When?
Throwing tasters are on Friday or Saturday afternoons (2-4.30), or Friday evenings (6-8.30)
If you come on a Friday evening you are welcome to bring your own bottle, 'gin-in-a-tin', or can of beer!

What will I make?
An afternoon is a short time to learn the skill of throwing. Realistically, people new to throwing will make a small bowl or pot - which are not to be underestimated! Super useful for nuts, olives or jewellery!
One finished piece is included as part of the course fee. It's better to consider the environment and recycle extra pieces, but if you would like them they will be £5 each.
Glazing and Decorating
You can choose your piece to be glazed in one of our studio glazes - we have a range of contemporary colours from neutrals to blues and greens.
This happens after the piece is dried and bisc fired (which takes 2-3 weeks).
If you would like to glaze yourself or paint a pattern, you are welcome to return when the piece is bisc fired to do this (at no extra charge).
How Many Spaces?
We have a light and airy studio with eight wheels - so the maximum number will be eight people.
There is plenty of time for individual help with everybody - and importantly plenty of time for everybody to practice on their own and have as many attempts as needed. Trying and failing is part of the process!
Top Tips
Please wear comfy old clothes. We have aprons, but it’s highly likely you’ll get some clay splatters on your clothes. It doesn’t stain and is easy to wash out.
We recommend taking watches and bracelets off (as they may get scratched on the wheel).
Most people like to take their rings off, but that’s your choice - they will get dirty, but not harmed.
Be careful of your back and wrists. Throwing involves bending over the wheel and and putting some force through your wrists. If you have back or wrist problems, consider waiting until they improve.
