Our light and airy studio is ready to welcome budding potters discover their hidden talents.
We are in Hartley Wintney, opposite the golf course (and we have a large car park!)
I'm Beccy, potter and teacher, patiently helping students play with mud and see their creativity unfold.
With our ranges of contemporary coloured glazes you can create your own functional masterpieces!
If you've ever wondered what throwing is like, a half day taster session ( on Friday or Saturday afternoon) is perfect.
You'll learn to center the clay and make simple pots and bowls.
This 6 week Throwing & Glazing course is an introduction to pottery for beginners.
You'll learn how to throw, carve to add surface texture, trim leather hard clay, add handles, and decorate and glaze your pieces.
Join our one and a half day throwing & glazing course and experience the sense of achievement making a beautiful functional object with your hands.
One day is throwing, and a half day following is for decorating and glazing
You bring the beer and wine, we'll bring the clay!
Sharing with your friends the laughs and successes of playing with clay and creating your own masterpieces is a fantastic evening!
It's a great activity for family groups with more than one generation, and teambuilding with colleagues.
Rolling clay into slabs and constructing allows you to make pieces with straight edges, or fluted organic forms. You can make and paint your piece in the same session, or choose one of our studio glazes.
For potters who have completed a course with us, you can come back and practice on open studios - on a pay as you go basis.
My sister and I both really enjoyed our day at the pottery with you. We both felt you were a really good teacher - my sister had tried the wheel before and nobody had explained the need to keep very still and steady. It was a lovely chilled out space with just the right amount of input.

It was my first time using a wheel and Beccy’s guidance was so good I managed to make three little pots. The studio is a wonderful space and I was made to feel really comfortable. I’ll definitely be back and I’ve already recommended her to friends

I have been wanting to do a pottery course for ages but could not find the right fit until I found Beccy and Make Hartley Wintney! I LOVED every minute of it and am so pleased with the pieces I made. Beccy is a fantastic teacher, so knowledgeable and patient. I am looking at doing the advanced course and the will definately do the open sessions.

I have just completed a short course in throwing clay and have astounded myself! Beccy is so incredibly talented as a teacher, not only did she ensure that we all had fun but enabled me to feel very proud of the four “masterpieces” that I produced . I was a complete beginner but her kind words and excellent teaching gave me the confidence make three very different bowls and a mug that I use on a daily basis! Thank you Beccy.

As a complete beginner, I tried a 4 week throwing course. Beccy was always informative, helpful and patient. The jug I made was beyond anything I could have imagined. I wanted to share the experience, so tried a hand building session with my grandson. Again, Beccy inspired both of us and we had a productive and fun time.

My daughter and I have just completed one of Beccy’s pottery courses and it’s save to say we didn’t want it to end. We both had such a wonderful time attending the classes each week and loved what we have both made. Cups jug bowls and a doughnut vase
We would definitely recommend this for a fun enjoyable course to do and we both now have the bug for it so I’m sure we will be back again.

A beginner to throwing, I was delighted to have Becki's relaxed but expert tuition and advice to not aim too high to begin with. Lots of dodgy pots...then a few decent ones to take home! A wheel per student and a well organised studio goes towards maximum learning, loved my course.

I attended a four-week beginner course and had an amazing time. Beccy is a wonderful teacher, she created a welcoming, fun and relaxing atmosphere at her studio. Beccy showed us the appropriate techniques and provided guidance and explanations when she saw that I was struggling with some bits, but also allowed us to play with clay and make mistakes. At the end I chose some of my work, which Beccy fired and glazed (colours that I selected). it was a great fun and could not recommend it enough! Had a blast and then got to bring some pieces home :)

Absolutely fabulous pottery studio. Each of us (6 in class) had our own wheels and were able to follow Beccy excellent instructions and demonstrations. I was thrilled with what I produced after a weekend taster afternoon. Highly recommend for anyone interested. A taster session would make the perfect Christmas gift!

I couldn’t recommend a pottery course with Beccy anymore! Having met her at the maltings monthly market in farnham I thought I would start my pottery journey with a 4 week course! And what a great experience it was! Beccy is so helpful and patient and really let us experiment with shapes and ideas we had! My pieces turned out better than expected and I can’t wait to book onto my next course! Thanks Beccy!

Please contact us if you cannot find an answer to your question.
All courses includes tuition in a small group of up to six people, clay and use of all equipment.
Depending on which course you attend, you'll get at least one finished glazed piece. More are generally £5 each . This covers the cost of clay and glaze, and finishing, bisque firing and glaze firing.
Pottery is a mucky business, so wear old clothes! We have aprons to catch most of the splatters. The studio can be chilly in winter, so wear warm clothes in colder months
We use a strong stoneware clay, light in colour. All finished glazed pieces are food safe and microwave and dishwasher safe.
Pottery needs patience! When your pot is finished it needs to dry fully. This can take a week or more (depending on the weather outside.) When there is a kiln load ready, it will have its first “biscuit” firing, This dries it out even more and changes the chemical composition to turn clay into ceramic. This is stronger than the “dry mud” that went into the kiln, but it is very brittle and will absorb moisture like a sponge. The next stage is to apply glaze (at this stage a muddy looking water suspension), then fire to about 1240 oC, spending about 36 hours in the kiln. The glaze vitrifies into a waterproof coating and the ceramic strengthens into the strong durable material we are all familiar with.
So, all in all, it will be 4-6 weeks before your finished piece is ready for you to collect.
We'll get in touch when it’s ready and you are welcome to collect in person. We can also send via courier, although postage fees will apply.
We'll keep your glazed finished pieces four months from the date of your course. It's sad if you don't collect them, but if your circumstances change we understand. If they are destined for recycling, they will be offered to other students for plant pot crocs.
For throwing classes we can only welcome budding potters into groups who are over 18 years old, or from 15 with a responsible adult. If family groups would like to come, with children and their parents, that is fine! But please bear in mind that throwing on the wheel requires a bit of strength, so younger children find it very difficult.
For hand building courses, children from 10 are welcome with an adult.
Throwing on the potters wheel means a lot of bending over. If you have back problems, please delay your pottery experience until it's better.
You'll also need to push through your wrists, so its best to avoid if you have wrist injury.
We are in Hartley Wintney, on the A30 opposite the golf club.
The studio is light and airy, on the first floor.
Yes, there is a car park for students. Free!
If you would like to reschedule your booking (because of illness or other unforeseen events) you can do right up to the day before the event, and we'll do our best to rearrange at a time that suits you.
If you would like to cancel your booking with more than one month before the event, you'll get a full refund. If you cancel between one week and one month before, that is a 50% refund. Less than one week before, 25% refund. Less than one day before the event, sorry no refund.
